The History of the Water Wheel

The water wheel is an ancient device that uses flowing or falling water to create power by means of paddles mounted around a wheel. The force of the water moves the paddles, and the consequent rotation of the wheel is transmitted to machinery via the shaft of the wheel. The first reference to a water wheel dates back to around 4000 BCE. Vitruvius, an engineer who died in 14 CE, has been credited with creating and using a vertical water wheel during Roman times. The wheels were used for crop irrigation and grinding grains, as well as to supply drinking water to villages. In later years, they drove sawmills, pumps, forge bellows, tilt-hammers, and trip hammers, and even powered textile mills. The water wheel was likely the first method of mechanical energy developed to replace the work of humans and animals. Types of Water Wheels There are three main types of water wheels. One is the horizontal water wheel: Water flows from an aqueduct and the forward action of the water turns the wheel. Another is the overshot vertical water wheel, in which water flows from an aqueduct and the gravity of the water turns the wheel. Finally, the undershot vertical water wheel works by being placed in a stream and turned by the rivers natural motion. The First Water Wheels The first water wheels were horizontal and can be described as grindstones mounted atop vertical shafts whose vaned or paddled lower ends dipped into a swift stream. But as early as the first century, the horizontal water wheel—which was terribly inefficient in transferring the power of the current to the milling mechanism—was replaced by water wheels of the vertical design. Water Wheel Uses and Developments Water wheels were most often used to power different types of mills. A combination of the water wheel and mill is called a watermill. An early horizontal-wheeled watermill used for grinding grain in Greece was called the Norse Mill. In Syria, watermills were called noriahs.† They were used for running mills to process cotton into cloth. In 1839, Lorenzo Dow Adkins of Perry Township, Ohio received a patent for another water wheel innovation, the spiral-bucket water wheel. The Hydraulic Turbine The hydraulic turbine is a modern invention based on the same principles as the water wheel. It’s a rotary engine that uses the flow of fluid—either gas or liquid—to turn a shaft that drives machinery. Flowing or falling water strikes a series of blades or buckets attached around a shaft. The shaft then rotates and the motion drives the rotor of an electric generator. Hydraulic turbines are used in hydroelectric power stations.

From the start of The Simpsons you get the impression that Bart is the main character but as the many different series went on and progressed through the nineties, Homer became spotlighted and in my opinion became the main character. I think the main reason he became increasingly popular was because of the increase in his stupidity and irresponsibility. Homer’s obvious description would be; lazing around, watching television a lot, eating too much, and drinking a lot of beer (occasionally in Moe’s Tavern). Viewers will also have an immediate understanding of his character at the intro when they see him being careless by dropping some sort of nuclear object. Marge is the person that barely holds the family together. She is a compulsive cleaner and shows the typical traits of an ordinary American housewife. She is shown to be shopping in the credits screen which is a typical attribute of a housewife. Lisa is the odd one out in the family. She is in second grade and probably the most intelligent person in all of Springfield. She has the vocabulary of an intellectual woman, and she plays the saxophone like a professional. This is shown at the credits screen when she trails off into her own tune on the saxophone seeing as her knowledge for music is far greater than the other children. Maggie is quite mysterious in her way, she is always seen sucking on a dummy and falling over all the time. The credits screen at the beginning of each episode show a brief characteristic of each member of the family and certain other characters in the cartoon. The perfect satire of an American family shows them all returning from their job, school or errand to their abode not to see each other, but to watch T. V. This categorizes Americans and portrays them as being ‘couch potatoes’. Other main characters include Moe (owner of ‘Moe’s Tavern’), Barney (a regular drunkard at Moe’s, and friend to Homer), Apu (proprietor of the ‘Kwik-E-Mart’), Principal Skinner of Bart and Lisa’s school. There are a whole lot more including Millhouse (Bart’s ‘Dopey’ friend) and Chief Wiggum (the extremely gullible and unintelligent police officer) – the list goes on. Springfield is a community where everybody is associated with each other on good or bad terms. The episode I am going to analyze is ‘Homer Badman’ in which Homer is accused of sexually harassing someone and subsequently the scandal is dragged on and becomes deeply exaggerated. This episode is poking fun at quite a few things, but mainly feminism and the media. The episode starts with Homer inviting Marge to the ‘Candy Industry Trade’ and the children must therefore be looked after by a baby sitter, Ashley Grant, a feminist. A good example of a satire is directed at masculinity when Ashley pulls out a violent video game and tells Bart he may play if he does homework, he is instantly hypnotized and accepts the task. This shows that many males are addicted to violence and shows that Bart even agrees to do the least likely activity you would associate with him just to play a video game which contains violence. A rather humorous satire is demonstrated when Homer and Marge arrive at the industry, a man calls Homer over and advertises the ‘Wax Lips’ candy which has â€Å"1000 uses†. Homer is skeptical and asks what the uses are and the man states one but is unable to continue and pretends to walk down an imaginary staircase. This was a small satire on advertising because it shows people will say anything to make customers buy their products. This bears a striking resemblance to reality where people do whatever they can to sell their product but normally after it is bought and the customer asks for feedback or has any difficulties with the certain product, the person who sold it will not care because he/she has made their money. In real life it is not dissimilar, a good example would be Nike trainers that are sold worldwide and the amount of advertising it receives. The advertising normally influences the customer who then goes on to influence many with the product. When Homer and Marge escape the ‘Candy Industry Trade’ another satire is shown by a huge candy explosion illustrating how an action movie would use these type of scenes. The sound of the explosion is made to sound very realistic which normally wouldn’t be expected from a cartoon. The heart of this episode is found when Homer drives Ashley home in his car, you can tell that Ashley feels pressured and is reluctant at the least to be alone with a man. You read "The Simpsons" in category "Papers" When Ashley eventually reaches her destination, Homer reaches for her backside for the sweet that was left attached to her jeans. Due to Ashley’s femininity she takes this as a sexual attack of some sort, the episode reaches a high temperature from this point onwards. The public start harassing Homer for the fake or misunderstood accusations made by Ashley Grant. When visiting Homer at his house, he immediately assumes they are from the candy convention but realizes otherwise. After hearing their chants, he comes out to prove his innocence when a gust of wind blows his gown off revealing his naked body to the crowd which gives the impression that Homer is a streaker. They then track Homer wherever he is and try to bring shame to him which of course brings the attention to the media who then come into play. Homer’s life becomes ruined by the protesters and is looking for the help of the Lord when â€Å"God†¦ frey Jones† of the T. V show, ‘Rockbottom’ rings Homer at that precise moment claiming that they will help his problems in an interview. The exaggeration of this satire is huge because after the innocence proclaimed by Homer, the interview is edited (horribly) to make Homer look guilty, they replaced the word candy with â€Å"Can† which associates with the backside of a person in American, and splices almost of all his words (if the bad quality didn’t show how this interview was edited the clock besides Homer’s head did, which kept on changing to and fro in a moderate speed). The interview, although evidently fake was believed by everyone which was a big exaggeration to hype the whole incident up. This part of the cartoon would be more humorous to adults or older viewers because younger viewers probably wouldn’t know much about how the media works, but the animators did make it appeal to both by making Homer sound weird which would make it more humorous or funny for the younger watchers. This mounted up to the whole media being on Homer’s case, helicopters took pictures of him naked in shower curtains claiming they gave him â€Å"Sexual powers†, a short film was recreated to show Homer recklessly driving a helpless girl which of course was deeply exaggerated and even a 24 hour live coverage of The Simpsons’ household is shown to the public to disgrace him even further. All these examples show how the media want to portray Homer as crook and will do almost anything to achieve it. Homer’s friends Moe and Barney charge through the crowd of people and claim to be his â€Å"Only friends† only to announce they were to be auctioning â€Å"The real dirt† on Homer Simpson. This shows that even your closest friends can deceive you just to gain a foothold in the public eye. There is a farce on the Sally Jesse Raphael show when a group of young women weep and share their emotions on national T. V about their troubled past with Homer when it is just an act to gain more ratings and publicity. The voice of Sally Jesse Raphael sounds very life like and ‘professional’ and again sounds more like a real life television show unlike a cartoon. It also sounds serious but it’s basically a very humorous farce on that particular chat show. This may cause the viewer to think a number of things, perhaps a younger viewer would sympathize with the young women, but older viewers would know that it is all pre meditated and simply propaganda. When Homer asks for a hug from Lisa and Bart they hesitate which makes Homer question their belief in him, after they reassure him he leaves them and they run to the T. V to give it a hug and a kiss. This is a satire on the amount of kids who base all their knowledge from watching too much T. V and spending too much time with it. Homer’s last resort is public access television. He proclaims his innocence and two calls are made but one wrong number and the other a meaningless advertising call (the two phone calls sounded very realistic once again, you can see that The Simpsons was made to perfection seeing as every sound effect is purposely life like). This is satirical on Public Access T. V because its evidence that hardly anyone watches it and it is very dull. Homer, now hopeless gets paid a visit from Willie who claims he filmed him and Ashley in the car and also states that he films couples late at night and stereotypes his Scottish countrymen by saying they all do the same and somewhat portrays them as perverts. He also has a clip of the mayor committing adultery which shows that many people with high authority don’t always show their true loyalty when in private. In the end Homer is proven innocent, Rock Bottom apologize briefly along with a couple of hundred other issues. This shows that when the media get their facts wrong, they are averse to apologize or do it briefly so it will not affect their ratings. Homer finds he has learnt nothing from his experience and gives T. V a hug telling it, â€Å"Let’s never fight again†. The Simpsons can appeal to any type of audience as it contains many different degrees of comedy. Older and younger viewers can all empathize with the cartoon. Mainly older viewers relate to or find the satirical scenes entertaining such as the man advertising the wax lips, or even the short reconstruction propaganda film of Homer in the car with Ashley. There are countless others which make it so funny. The younger generation may find the more simplistic parts of the cartoon more comical such as the candy trade explosion where Homer is lifted high above his feet, which is also satirical on action films. The quantity and range of comedy and satirical scenes are immense and all are very witty which is why The Simpsons attracts a huge audience because of its mass appeal. If you have ever been tempted to do something that is completely off limits, then perhaps you can identify with the famously foolish characters of Adam and Eve and their unfortunate predicament. Yes, the story of Adam and Eve is renowned the world over and, in some religions, explains the reason why we are all cursed with imperfection and death; and it all began with a handful of well-put words. Satan the Devil, described in the book of Revelation as the â€Å"Original Serpent,† brought up some points in an attempt to undermine Eve’s loyalty to Jehovah God, and succeeded for several reasons. Satan the Devil succeeded in his persuasion of Adam and Eve because of his crafty use of emotional appeal, loaded words, propaganda, and Attacking the Person. To begin with, the first reason that Satan succeeded in persuading Adam and Eve was his use of emotional appeal. It is always painful when you feel like you have been duped and revenge is often a powerful emotion that follows. So said the Devil in Genesis 3:1, â€Å"Is it really so that God has said you must not eat from every tree of the garden?† Here he is trying to get Eve to dwell on injustices that weren’t even there. After Eve tells him that God never said that, Satan continued, â€Å"You positively will not die† if she ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad. Here, not only did Satan become an inventor the hooligan is referred to later as the â€Å"Father of the Lie† he was telling Eve that she had been duped. He was telling her that God had lied to her, and he did this to spark the emotions inside of her to move her to retaliate in kind. As we can see from the sorry state of the world, hell really hath no fury like a woman scorned. Next, Satan’s success in his persuasion was rooted in loaded words. When someone has a weak vocabulary, they are certainly less persuasive and not moving; sadly for us, though, it was not so with Satan. In Genesis 3:5, Satan says â€Å"For God knows that in the very day of your eating your eyes are bound to be opened and you are bound to be like God†. Satan could have easily said â€Å"you’ll be like God,† which would have had, essentially, the same meaning. Instead, however, he used the loaded word â€Å"bound,† which expresses that they will, without the shadow of a doubt, â€Å"become like God†. Using the word â€Å"bound† undoubtedly gave Eve a sense of assurance. Because of his use of loaded words, Satan succeeded in instilling a false sense of security in Eve, which lead to her inevitable downfall proved Satan all the more crafty. Thirdly, the Devil succeeded in his persuasion of Adam and Eve because of his skillful use of propaganda. The dictionary definition of propaganda is â€Å"Information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.† Genesis 3:4,5 contains the biggest example of propaganda of all time. Satan knew exactly what would happen if Adam and Eve disobeyed the direct order of their heavenly father â€Å"the wages sin pays is death,† says Romans 6:23. Yet, he told her what she wanted to hear; that she would, rather, â€Å"become like God† upon eating the fruit, being able to decide for herself what was good and bad. He said that she â€Å"positively [would] not die,† and he used his propaganda to deliberately mislead Eve and, in the process, guarantee the death of all humans, â€Å"because they all had sinned.† (Romans 5:12) We know that his use of propaganda worked well, through Eve’s reactions. When he first questioned whether God had told them to eat of no trees of the Garden, she defended Jehovah’s law against the misinformation. After the Devil attempted to sway the young woman’s resolve, notice what she does in verse six of chapter three. She looked upon the tree and, suddenly, saw that it was something to be longed for to the eyes, and that â€Å"the tree was desirable to look upon.† What changed? The propaganda that Satan spat out at her had changed the way she looked upon the tree, and it wasn’t until she was caught sinning against God that she realized she had been mislead brainwashed into thinking the tree was fine to eat from. Satan obviously knew that Eve was younger than Adam, less experienced and used his propaganda upon Eve because she was more susceptible to his wily ways which means that he not only is a master of propaganda, but also Knows His Audience and that is why he was so successful in his use of persuasion a nd deception. Finally, Satan was a masterful persuader and succeeded in turning Adam and Eve against God because he Attacked the Person. If you have ever had a so-called â€Å"friend† try and persuade you to do something that you have been told not to do such as if your parents told you to be home before a certain time, or your school doesn’t allow students to just meander off campus then perhaps you are familiar with the method. â€Å"Well that’s a stupid rule,† your friend might say. Or mayhap it’ll be something like â€Å"They’re just always trying to stop you from having fun.† Either way, they are using aggressive methods to bring down the validity of someone’s argument, and in time, you may start to believe it too. Satan didn’t attack Eve, but he certainly bad-mouthed someone else even more important when he said that, upon eating the fruit, â€Å"You positively will not die. For God knows that in the very day of your eating f rom [the tree] your eyes are bound to be opened and you are bound to be like God, knowing good and bad.† Many people casually pass over this verse and, knowing that Satan was lying about the â€Å"you positively will not die† part that they don’t understand the deeper meaning behind what accusations Satan was bringing up. What was he saying? â€Å"In the very day of your eating from [the tree] your eyes are bound to be opened† He just attacked Jehovah God himself, insinuating that he was deliberately holding back good things from humanity. Next, he says that they will be like God, â€Å"knowing good and bad.† Now we are all free moral agents, able to do what is right and what is wrong at our own will, and likewise so were Adam and Eve, who, if they did not have free will, would not have been capable to betraying their God and eat of the fruit of the garden. So if it didn’t give Adam and Eve free will, what did it do? Rather than give Adam and Eve mystical powers or make them deities, it was but a declaration a declaration that was that humanity could decide for itself what was good and evil, not God. This shows that not only did Satan attack God,he also lead those he was attempting to persuade, Adam and Eve, to do the act same. Persuasion success! Yes, Satan instilled it in Adam and Eve’s minds that God’s rule was not righteous or just, but rather that Jehovah had lied to them, withheld good things from them, and that every human had a right to rule himself and decide for themselves what was right and wrong through his use of Attack the Person. So as we have just witnessed, the Devil was a crafty persuader who succeeded in turning the firstborn of humanity against their Divine instructor through the use of several methods. First, he used emotional appeal to get his prey to stop thinking logically and betray their Heavenly Father no matter the consequences or facts simply out of spite. Secondly, he used loaded words to instill in Eve a sense of assured victory. Third, he used propaganda, his false information, to deliberately cloud the mind of young Eve and allow him to fill her head with the seeds of rebellion. Finally, he Attacked the Person by saying that God was trying to push his views of right and wrong upon mankind and that humans could decide for themselves what good and evil are and turned Adam and Eve against Him. Things haven’t changed much in the last 6000 or so years since the Betrayal in the Garden of Eden, and the Devil still uses the same tactics today to make us doubt our resolve; he would be doing himself no favors by changing his tactics if they are already working. Now that we know exactly what his methods are, let us ever be determined to stay steadfast and keep ourselves from succumbing to his wily, nefarious, and persuasive ways.
